Advent is the beginning of the liturgical church calendar – an ancient tool that Christians have used to practice the rhythms of remembering, reflecting, preparing, and celebrating. Advent comes before the celebration of the 12 days of Christmas, and is an opportunity to both remember the coming of Christ that we celebrate at Christmas, and to practice hoping and anticipating that Christ might come to meet us in the present. Advent, then, is an invitation to both remember a story and to join one. It’s a story that began long before the birth of Jesus, and continues now as we make sense of the divine in our own lives. It is important not to just live inside of our minds, but to live out the advent story within our bodies. So let’s practice! We invite you to join the people of Gobin Church to discuss the practice of participation every Wednesday in Advent at 6pm.
Our time together will be rooted in the story of an oppressed people, particularly defined by the scandalized and scorned women listed in Matthew’s genealogy. We will connect this to the story of Mary and the incarnation of Jesus. We will conclude each week with a prayer practice designed to help us embrace and embody what we have learned. Our hope is that through this time we will find ourselves within the big story of God and that we would deepen our love for God, for ourselves, and for others.
Join us here on the Gobin Website or on Gobin’s Facebook page on Wednesdays at 6pm during Advent.
