Dear Gobin Family,
The Indiana State Department of Health continues to advise: “Smaller, non-essential gatherings held in venues which do not allow social distancing of six (6) feet per person should be postponed or canceled.”
As a community of followers of Jesus Christ, we know a few things:
1. The most frequent phrase in scripture is some form of “Do Not Be Afraid.” However difficult it may be, we are encouraged by our loving God to approach this season of uncertainty without fear. This is far easier said than done, I know. In fact, it takes prayer and practice. Watch Joel Everson talk about such practices here. I am especially thankful for Joel Everson’s helpful teaching at 20:17.
2. We are called to love God AND to love our neighbors. We know that a way we can all contribute to the good of our neighbors, especially older adults and immunosuppressed people who are more at risk, is to find ways for community without physically communing.
Gobin Church will contribute to this effort, to showing our lives are “good news,” by holding our Sunday worship service through online streaming and radio broadcast only. We are following the recommendations of the ISDH and CDC in doing so, as are other faith communities throughout the nation. Hopefully we can alleviate pressure on our overtaxed health care system by preventing the spread of COVID-19.
Our worship service this Sunday will still begin at 10:30am. If you only have access to radio broadcast, we invite you to tune in to WGRE 91.5.
However, you can join us online. Simply go to Gobin’s Live Feed here. You will be able to participate in the readings, songs, and prayers just as you would if you were here in person.
In the meantime:
Pray for those who are affected by this virus – those who are ill, the medical professionals treating them, the scientists working on vaccines and cures and the leaders making tough decisions to try and curb the spread of the virus and keep us safe. Pray for those with mental health concerns, as well as those who feel extra lonely during this time –please reach out to anyone you think might be feeling isolated over the next few weeks.
Educate yourself about the Coronavirus from credible and reliable sources, such as the World Health Organization, the CDC, and the Indiana State Department of Health. Know the symptoms and have a plan for what you would do if you or a family member were to become sick.
Check on your friends and neighbors. If you know someone who may not have internet access, give them a call and share the information in this email. If the virus spreads through our community as predicted, we can continue to reach out and care for one another through phone calls, emails and social media.
As the virus spreads, many doctors and nurses will be working long hours. Bless these medical professionals with acts of kindness and notes of appreciation.
Remember this is temporary. Our church continues to serve our congregation and community. Continue to be a part of the ministry – the need for the support you give in Greencastle and around the world continues despite the pandemic. Watch your email for opportunities to serve individually or in smaller groups. Please continue your financial support of the work of the church. Many of you have set up your tithes and offerings to be automatically given. If you haven’t, you can give your tithes and offering online here, or you can mail a check to Gobin Church at PO BOX 66, Greencastle, IN, 46135.
Please reach out to me or any member of the Leadership Team with questions or concerns, and if you or someone you know needs care. We continue to live into our vision of honestly sharing our whole selves with one another in relationship, even when the season necessitates we do so in imaginative, creative and virtual ways.
Finally, friends, let us renew our trust in God. I share with you the words of the prophet Isaiah: “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
Grace and peace,
