No one wants to be a worse person tomorrow than they were today. In fact, I’d argue that no one wants to be the same tomorrow as today. It’s not our endless desire for progress or perfectionism. It’s that we’re made for more than this. We Methodist folk believe that all are made in the image of God. And that’s a pretty great image! The problem is sin, though we may not talk about it a lot. The good news is that God is willing to empower us to be the people we are created to be. It’s possible that the image of God can be restored in us. Call it holiness, sanctification, or better days ahead – there is life, full and abundant life waiting for those who commit their lives to following this Jesus guy.
Lots of folks have tried to do this on their own. Results vary. It’s almost as if humans are social creatures, meant to live in community. I know. People are the worst. But they’re also the best. It depends on the day, really. But we believe something unique happens when we enter the journey of discipleship together. That’s why our vision is to honestly share our whole selves with one another in relationship. We know what it’s like to live disconnected lives. It might be easier. But it’s not better. And it’s certainly not more fulfilling in the end.
That’s why the central piece of our spiritual growth at Gobin is our commitment to small group discipleship. We need a community within which we can answer the question, “How is it with your soul?” Let us grow together!
