Gobin 2016n Film Series:
In Spring 2016 Gobin presents the first annual “Gobin Spring Film Series.” The theme of this series is Spiritual Journeys. We are featuring films that follow the story of someone who is questioning their beliefs, and is transformed throughout the film as they confront their spirituality.
Sunday Evenings at 6:30pm in the Gobin United Methodist Church sanctuary
Harold and Maude – February 28
This classic dark comedy is the coming of age story about a young man befriending a woman in her late 70’s, who helps him overcome his obsession with death and suicide.
Whale Rider – March 13
Kahu, a twelve-year-old girl, aspires to be the leader of her tribe – a position reserved only for males. This beautifully depicted tale of a Maori tribe was shot on location in New Zealand, and was the winner of multiple international awards in 2003, as well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
Life of Pi – April 3
This visually striking adaptation of Yann Martel’s novel tells the story of an Indian boy’s ocean journey in the company of a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Life of Pi received many awards and accolades in 2003, including a Golden Globe and three Oscars.
Contact – April 24
Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey give memorable performances in this movie about Ellie Arroway – a young scientist who is determined to find evidence of extraterrestrial life. A host of Hollywood stars complete this cast, including Tom Skerrit whose character forces Ellie to rethink her theories on the existence of higher powers.
The Secret Garden – May 8 (Children are welcome!)
Just in time for Mother’s Day, the 1993 version of The Secret Garden touchingly retells the classic tale by Frances Hodgson Burnett. An orphaned girl is sent to live with her uncle in a mansion full of secrets. As she explores her new surroundings she finds ways to unlock areas of the estate that were previously neglected, and inspires new growth.
Movies are free to the public.
